Event Information:

Come learn about native plant landscaping with this FREE lecture at the Maritime Museum! Everything is connected - what you have in your backyard has a direct correlation to a successful ecosystem. Native plants are vital for sustaining balanced insect populations that birds need to feed their young. By planting natives, gardeners can provide important food sources for birds, butterflies, and other insects, while reducing the adverse impacts of habitat loss and competition with invasive species, and increasing biodiversity. Our speaker, Erin Markel, is an environmental scientist with JMT Engineering, specializing in wetlands science. She has incorporated her professional interest in native plants into her home life by planting a native garden in her own backyard. Learn how you, too, can beautify your yard while providing significant benefits to wildlife. Erin will make plant recommendations specific to our region, based on research by Dr. Douglas Tallamy at the University of Delaware. He documented his research in the book, "Bringing Nature Home." Dr. Tallamy's book will be for sale at the Museum's Garden Mart & Plant Sale from May 20-21.
